My first Autocross 1998

An Autocross is an event which utilizes your driving skills on a pre-defined course made up of cones, it requires you to quickly accelerate to the maximum speed in the shortest distance interval allowed and break as fast as you can for the turn, and accelerate again.

The best and fastest cars are not really the winners here in this event,  it is a combinations of your skills and judgment.  A big contribution to the fastest lap time has to do with the balance of the car.

I am not going to get into the details of how to balance a car in a race, if you are interested please pick up a copy of this book in your local book store and read about it.   "Porsche High Performance Driving" by Vic Elkford.

This event is held by our local Georgia PCA (Porsche) club, there were about 70 participant there with their Porsche that day.  There were 911, 914, 944, 928 and one 993 Twin Turbo.

The race is divided up into three groups, and each group takes turn to race on the track.  Each person gets 4 laps around the track and the best lap time is used to determine your score.  There were a lot of waiting around, these are pictures of me waiting to get to the starting line.

Special thanks to Jill Foss and her husband E.T.  these pictures will not be possible without them.  They came to cheer for me at my first Autocross event, gave me the encouragement I needed to finish the race even after my third DNF.
